Alfonzo bear

More than a century ago Grand Duke George Romanov, during his trip to Germany, visited the little town of Giengen (full name Giengen an der Brenz). One of the attractions of this town was the Steiff toy factory. The glory of the new toy from the Giengen factory – a bear with moveable arms and legs – reached already Russia, however only the members of the imperial family could afford such an exclusive plush friend. George Michailovitch couldn't of course remain indifferent to such an unusual hero and chose for his five-years old daughter Xenia a gift on upcoming 1908 Christmas – the red mohair bear by Steiff. The girl liked the toy so much that she almost never parted with the Teddy bear, gave it the name – Alfonzo, and asked her nurse to make a suit for the Teddy bear – a Russian skewed-collared shirt and trousers.

Difficult events happening in our country in the early 20 th century forced the princely family to leave the motherland. But even during the evacuation Princess Xenia never left her lovely Teddy bear. Princess moved a lot and the old friend Alfonzo reminding her of the far-away motherland, father and happy childhood was always with her. After Princess Xenia’s death Teddy bear Alfonzo, already as a real family heirloom, was inherited by her daughter Nancy. In 1989 Nancy decided to place the Teddy bear on auction and there it was bought by one of the most famous toy collectors Ian Pout. By Ian’s own admission, it was the first time when he got a toy with such an unusual romantic life story. The story touched him so deeply that he couldn’t but share it with the world. Ian travelled with Alfonzo all over the world, he has been to Japan, Monaco, the USA, and of course Germany – the collector with Alfonzo visited the motherland of the Teddy bear – in the hundredth anniversary of the toy. Later Ian published a book about the story of Alfonzo and illustrated it with photos.

In memory of the very Teddy bear in year 2008 Steiff factory replicated it and reproduced limited quantity of 1908 bears. The toys of this anniversary edition are unique – for the first time a Teddy bear was manufactured antique: the clothes was artificially aged, distressed, had buffies and wholes. Even body and paws were deformed as if wood dust the bear was stuffed with had rumpled over time. This was the very Teddy bear that was presented to Princess Xeniya by her loving father and Grand Duke.

Being enspired by this amazing story we decided to share it with you to let as many people as possible know about this Teddy bear and give them an opportunity to get a piece of history by acquiring the bear.

This is the reason why we have created our bear Alfonzo. The famous Teddy bear of Princess Xenia has been used as a sample for our designer toy. Our Teddy bear has been manufactured of red fur, and stuffed with wood dust like its plush brother. Arms, legs and head of our toy are moveable too – like they were by the Teddy bear created in the early 20th century.

Our toys are hand-made. They are created with love and warmth of our hearts.

We would like our Teddy bear Alfonzo to be not just a simple souvenir but to become the member of your family as it happened to Alfonzo of the Romanov family. Let this red Teddy bear remind you of the importance to preserve the traditions of your family dynasty, and become a real heirloom handed down from generation to generation.

Don't forget: you hold not just a cute Teddy bear. This is the true story of one family. Let Alfonzo be a part of your family history.
